Why Use Cork?

Portuguese cork is one of the world’s most sustainable natural materials. Harvested from the cork oak tree without harming it, cork naturally regenerates every 9 to 12 years, making it a renewable and eco-friendly choice.

Lightweight, durable, and naturally water-resistant, cork products are widely used in fashion, home décor, corporate gifts, and premium accessories. Every piece features a unique natural texture, combining timeless design with exceptional functionality.

At Line Cork, we transform premium Portuguese cork into elegant accessories and sustainable products that reflect quality, craftsmanship, and innovation. Whether you’re looking for cork bags, corporate gifts, or custom-made solutions, cork offers the perfect balance between style, durability, and environmental responsibility.

The Growth of the Cork Oak

The journey of Portuguese cork begins with the cork oak tree (Quercus suber), a protected species native to the Mediterranean region. Unlike other raw materials, cork requires time, patience, and careful forest management. A newly planted cork oak needs approximately 25 years before its bark can be harvested for the first time.

This first harvest produces virgin cork, a rough material mainly used for industrial applications. The tree is then left to regenerate naturally for another 9 years. With each harvesting cycle, the bark becomes denser, smoother, and more uniform. From the third harvest onwards, when the tree is around 43 years old, it produces the premium Portuguese cork used to manufacture luxury cork products, fashion accessories, home décor, and corporate gifts.

The Cork Harvesting Process

Every 9 to 12 years, experienced harvesters carefully remove the outer bark using traditional hand axes. This highly skilled process requires precision to ensure that only the bark is removed, leaving the cork oak tree healthy and able to regenerate naturally.

Once harvested, the cork planks are stacked outdoors and left to season naturally for several months. They are then boiled in clean water to improve flexibility, eliminate impurities, and stabilize the material. After drying, grading, and careful selection, the cork is transformed into premium natural cork products, combining exceptional durability, sustainability, and the craftsmanship for which Portuguese cork is recognised worldwide.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Avoid using bleach, solvents, or abrasive cleaners on your Portuguese cork products. A soft cloth and mild soap are all you need to preserve the cork’s natural beauty.

Avoid Prolonged Sun Exposure

Do not Machine Wash

Never machine wash or soak cork products in water. To maintain their quality and durability, always clean them gently by hand and allow them to air dry naturally.
